Core Belief No.4; I Hate Myself
How Do You Know If You Have This Belief?
As in Core Belief No. 3, grab a pen, paper but add a calculator and then go and look in a mirror, a full-length one is preferable. Now look into your eyes and then look slowly down your body. You will not want to do this because you will have the ‘voice-over’ whispering in your ear and you might feel like crying or feel angry and want to stop. But be strong and persist. Do this for at least 3 minutes. Then find a place where you can sit quietly and do the following exercise;
Write down how much you spend a month on all/some of these pastimes, activities, treatments.
- How much do you spend on alcohol/drugs/cigarettes per week/month?
- How much do you spend on beauty treatments; nails, hair, facials, massage, tattoos, hair removal, make-up, Botox or cosmetics per month?
- How much do you spend on clothes, shoes, handbags, jewellery a month?
- How much to you spend on DVD’s, computer/Xbox, Wii games etc, a month?
- How much money do you spend on eating out, movies, drives, parties, friends, gifts, etc. per month
- How much do you spend on chocolate, food, deserts, sweets, per month?
- How much money do you spend on self- development per month?
If you don’t know how exactly much, you could spend the rest of the month keeping track of everything you spend that is not a necessity like food, power, rent, mortgage etc. Then do this exercise again. You could also ‘guesstimate’ what you spend, although that would probably be false because most people don’t want to own up to what they spend on non-essentials, unless you are rich and like people to know how wealthy you are to get noticed, approval and attention.
The next step is to assess what you spend the most money on trying to make yourself look/feel better.
Is it the escape into alcohol, drugs or food to anesthetise your pain and depression? Is it spending a fortune on clothes and beauty treatments to cover up your poor self-image? It is the performance of spending money on others to make them think you’re a great person? Is it the withdrawing into make-believe games that keeps you out of sight and your self-hatred out of view? How much money would you save if you didn’t have to do any of 1-6 to make you feel great about yourself?
