Do You Sometimes Feel You're Going Mad?

 "You're Driving Me Mad!!"

I don’t know about you but I just hate that label ‘Mental Illness’!  It always implies madness and or insanity to me. “She’s going mental”; “You’re driving me mental”, “I think I’m having a mental breakdown”, ‘Mental Institution’ ‘Mental Ward’.

Although the word ‘mental’ does mean ‘Of The Mind’,  ‘Mental Illness’  has long been the cruel ‘catchall’ phrase invented by Psychology for all things pertaining to the brain and anything wrong with it.

‘Mental Illness’ also conjures up for me some old movie where the ‘Mad Doctor’ hooks up  an ancient ECT machine  to a helpless patient with electrodes attached to his head, strapped to  a bed having huge convulsions. In fact I saw a documentary of the first ECT treatments on TV just the other night, which prompted me to write this blog. It literally made my blood run cold!

Most people classified ‘mentally ill’ are in fact not. Only a very small percentage of people currently taking prescribed medications for diagnosed ‘mental’ problems have any damage to the brain at all.

I think depression, anger, addictions, eating disorders and other disorders that might be classified as ‘mental illnesses' are not. Firstly because the brain is not physically damaged and also because they are not really an illness, more of a condition.

These dis-eases are nearly always caused by ‘emotional issues’,  created by negative thoughts and feelings programmed into the brain  as children. Over time these powerful thoughts rewire our and our brain chemistry until we believe we're actually going mad or mental.

That we can’t ‘think straight’ when we feel overwhelmed by events, might have some bearing on the ‘mental’ tag but to label everybody ‘mentally ill’ causes such stigma that still today, many people suffering from depression, addictions and eating disorders are reluctant to talk about it or seek help.

We have worked with hundreds of people who were  diagnosed as 'mentally ill' and told they were 'unfixable' and and some who were so depressed they were thinking of  suicide. After eliminating their Negative Core Beliefs, they no longer feel depressed or use prescribed or illegal drugs, alcohol or food to make them feel better, and they certainly don’t call themselves ‘mentally ill’ any more

I would love to hear your thoughts on this, please leave a comment if you or someone you know has ever been diagnosed as ‘mentally ill’.  If you feel like you're going mad or crazy and if you'd like to take advantage of our FREE ONE-HOUR Skype or One-On-One session from wherever you are in the world, just head over to our Contacts Page and drop us a line.
