How The Brain Creates 'Negative Beliefs'

“The subconscious mind is simply an emotionless database of stored programmes"

Sigmund Freud, the ‘Father of Psychology’ once stated:

“The subconscious mind is simply an emotionless database of stored programmes whose function is strictly concerned with reading environmental signals and engaging in hard-wired behavioral programmes, no questions asked, no judgments made”.

So, how does the brain store both the literal and emotional memories of life's events? As far as we know there are four parts of the brain that are used in creating ‘negative beliefs’;

The Amygdala; Reptilian/Survival Brain - survival memory; self-preservation; fear; hunger; Fight-Flight-Freeze responses.
The Frontal Lobe; Conscious Reasoning/Logical Mind - data retrieval system; reasoning; forward planning; predicting the future; imagining; dreaming.
The Neo-Cortex; Sub-Conscious Mind - hard-wired programmes; records and stores information; visual and auditory memory; language.
The Limbic System; Emotional Mind - records and stores emotions; behaviour patterns; long-term memory.

Experts say that in the first eight years of life our Frontal Lobe is non-functioning and doesn't fully mature until we reach around twenty-one. Before then the most ancient part of our brain – the Amygdala - which most people know as the ‘Fight, Flight or Freeze’ brain - drives our survival.

As young children we are mostly ‘emotional beings’ with little reason or logic and without the capacity to tell fact from fiction. Try reasoning with a hysterical four year old who wants to wear her pink Wellingtons to bed – mud and all!

It is because of this inability to process information or feelings children will believe anything they are told or experience, to be the absolute and unequivocal TRUTH! Even as we grow up and we discover the real truth our brain is still hardwired with the original programming. These areas of the brain combined, which store billions of pieces of data and feeling information, unknown to us, become the template of our life.

For the most part we perceive our memories through the veil of our belief system. Many of these memories are inaccurate and flawed or have been misinterpreted by our inability to make sense of them. Some of them are so painful that our mind will not let us remember them. These false, irrational and illogical thoughts and feelings recorded in our Subconscious Brain and Limbic System become our  ‘belief system’  and most of us go through life totally oblivious of the absolute control it has over us.

Every negative belief stored in our subconscious memory sets the stage for our minds to continually ‘imagine, fear and assume the worst’ and predict a future that resounds with beliefs like; “This is all there is” and “Nothing will ever change for me”.

In his pioneering book ‘Biology of Belief’ - Neuro-scientist Bruce Lipman states:
“When it comes to sheer neurological processing abilities, the subconscious mind is millions of times more powerful that the conscious mind. If the desires of the conscious mind conflict with the programs in the subconscious mind, which ‘mind’ do think will win out?”
